The Best Ways to Travel to Barcelona from the Costa Brava

Discover the two best ways to get to Barcelona without a car and the best ways to explore the city on a day trip.

Barcelona is a city that has it all - culture, food, nightlife, and more. If you're staying in the Costa Brava and looking to take a day trip or a longer vacation to Barcelona, there are several options for getting there.

Train:

One of the easiest and most convenient ways to travel to Barcelona from the Costa Brava is by train. The Caldes de Malavella train station is located about half an hour away from the Costa Brava, and it offers free parking facilities. To find train timetables, you can visit the Rodalies de Catalunya website and look for trains marked as "MD," which are quicker and better trains.

Bus:

Another option for traveling to Barcelona from the Costa Brava is by bus. The bus from Platja d'Aro is a good option, but please note that dogs are not allowed on the bus. Make sure to select "Platja d'Aro Estació" as it is the main station where all buses stop. To find bus timetables, you can visit the Moventis website. Especially during the summer months we advise you to book the tickets in advance.

Museums and Shops:

If you plan on visiting museums in Barcelona, please note that they are normally closed on Mondays, except for the Camp Nou one which is open every day. Shops are closed on Sundays.

Exploring Barcelona:

Once you arrive in Barcelona, there are several ways to explore the city. If you want to get a good grasp of the city in one day, a good option is to take the tourist bus (hop on and off) - Bus turistic. We recommend the blue and red itineraries only, or you can move around with the metro if you just want to visit a couple of places that are not within reach on foot, and do the center on foot.

Traveling with Pets:

If you're traveling with pets, please note that dogs are not allowed on the bus. In our next blog post, we will provide you with all the information you need to know to travel with pets to Barcelona.

Traveling by Car:

If you're considering traveling to Barcelona by car from the Costa Brava, there are a few things to keep in mind. During the week, it's not advisable to travel by car because the city operates an environmental restriction on vehicle access. Vehicles must have a special energy label in order to enter the city center during the day. This restriction is in place from Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 8 pm, excluding public holidays. However, if you're traveling during the weekend, you're in luck! The environmental restriction doesn't apply on weekends or public holidays, so you're free to drive into the city center.
